Features

The Clos de Loyse creates a very individual style of Chardonnay derived from its granite soils, which lie to the south of Burgundy.

Vinification

The ‘Clos de Loyse' Burgundy is vinified in oak barrels, just like its northern cousins. The grapes are placed in the barrels straight after clarification, and there it undergoes both its alcoholic fermentation and its malolactic fermentation (either partial or full).

Maturing and bottling

The wine is matured on its lies, and undergoes regular batonnage. Of the Allier oak barrels used for this wine, 50% are new.

Tasting / Wine and food pairing

The Château des Jacques Clos de Loyse white Burgundy is a fruity wine with vanilla-tinged aromas. It is quite structured and tends to show good balance. It's the perfect match for poultry, fish, shellfish and goat's cheeses.

Conservation

Although very approachable when young, you can easily cellar this wine for five to eight years.

The Vintage

Winter was cold and dry, with frequent frosts. Early spring was not promising, with heavier rainfalls than the average over the course of the past 30 years. Nevertheless, the temperatures were gentle enough to promote budbreak. Temperatures climbed dramatically towards the end of Mai, and June was sunny and hot, with temperatures averaging 3șC above the norm. July continued in the same vein, with veraison kicking off towards the end of the month. The same month saw a virtual drought, with rainfall of 20% compared to the average. However, the summer temperatures of 2005 were more moderate than those of 2003. By September, temperatures were 2.5șC above average, but the night temperatures remained cool. This heat, in combination with the lack of rainfall, favoured the ripening of perfectly healthy grapes, and this has resulted in an exceptional vintage, judged by many to be the best for many decades. Harvest began on 13 September.
